So the side buttons can't be set to anything besides forward and back?

I have the Challenger Prime keyboard and mouse combo. There is software for the keyboard but no software for the mouse. How can I control the mouse without such software? I found some info on the forum for mouse color but not how to setup the side buttons. Any info on the side buttons and more info on the colors would be appreciated.
