I’ve got a tank of an old machine that I’ve upgraded through the years and this thing has been running in sleep or on for years without even a hiccup. Xeon E3-1231V3 in an H97M Pro, stock cooler, two fans, two HDD, two SSD and a 5700XT since it released powered by a 9yo CX-750M. I mainly play Paradox games and BG3/Skyrim type stuff so RAM and CPU drive my builds.
Well the other day I moved it to a new room (it’s been through 3 cross country moves and dozens of rooms) and it turned on for less than a second and then was dead.
First guess was PSU as it is a decade old and failed the paperclip test, so I got a new Toughpower GF3 850 to future proof a bit (I will never run a beast rig again 😞). Plugged it all in as it was before and got clicking and power button led surges (video here) which I assume is a short somewhere. It is also not passing the paperclip test though maybe it’s user error. Is it a faulty PSU or is it time to move on to Ryzen?
