TOUGHPOWER PF1 ARGB -1050W ARGB cable issue - cable damaged

I inadvertently connected the ARGB cable from the PSU to the motherboard to the SPDIF OUT header rather than an ARGB header. The SPDIF OUT is also a +5v header, but the pinout has the voltage on what would be the ground pin of the ARGB cable rather than the voltage pin. The cable overheated and the insulation on the ground wire was burned in places. I have two questions.

1. Is the PSU okay to use? I expect the answer is yes, but I'm paranoid about electricity and power.

2. Can I purchase a new ARGB cable for the PSU? If so, where?

3. Can I use the PSU ARGB header or is it dangerous or questionable to do so now?

The PSU appears to be working fine. The ARGB for the PSU also appears to be working fine, it's just not connected to the motherboard. I can change the ARGB lighting with the switches on the back of the PSU, but would rather have it controled by the motherboard.

Can someone address the three questions above?

Your PSU should be okay to use if it appears to be functioning normally after the incident. PSU cables are designed to handle the rated voltage and current, and they have various protective mechanisms to prevent damage from minor issues like reversed polarity. If the PSU is working fine and there are no noticeable problems, it's likely safe to continue using it.

It's possible to purchase replacement ARGB cables for your PSU, but finding the exact replacement may be a bit challenging, as these cables can vary between different PSU models and manufacturers. You may need to contact the PSU manufacturer's customer support or look for third-party replacement cables that are compatible with your specific PSU model. Be sure to provide them with your PSU's model and other relevant information to get the right replacement.

Using the PSU's ARGB header should be safe if it's designed to connect to your PSU's internal components, like cooling fans or lighting, and is not meant for motherboard connection. PSU ARGB headers are typically used for controlling the RGB lighting within the PSU itself and are not meant for motherboard synchronization. However, you can still control the lighting with the switches on the back of the PSU, as you've mentioned. While you may not have motherboard control over the lighting, it's a safe and functional alternative.

In summary, your PSU should be fine to use, but make sure you use the proper cables and headers in the future to avoid similar incidents. You can look for replacement ARGB cables specific to your PSU model or use the PSU's internal ARGB header for controlling the lighting within the power supply unit.

Here are some steps you can take:

  1. Safety First:

    • Before attempting any fixes, ensure that the power supply is turned off and unplugged from the electrical outlet.
    • If the cable is visibly damaged, do not attempt to use it.
  2. Contact the Manufacturer:

    • Reach out to the manufacturer's customer support for assistance. They may be able to provide a replacement cable or guide you on the appropriate course of action.
  3. Check Warranty:

    • If the power supply is still under warranty, the manufacturer may provide a replacement cable at no cost. Check your warranty information and contact the manufacturer accordingly.
  4. Professional Repair:

    • If the damage is severe or you're not comfortable fixing it yourself, consider taking the power supply to a professional for repair. Attempting to repair it yourself may void the warranty or lead to further damage.
  5. DIY Repair:

    • If you're experienced with electronics and comfortable making the repair yourself, you may be able to repair or replace the damaged part of the cable. However, this should only be attempted if you have the necessary skills and tools.
  6. Temporary Solutions:

    • If you need to use your system in the short term, you might consider using a spare cable if available. However, this is not a long-term solution, and you should still address the damaged cable.

Always prioritize safety, and if you are unsure about what to do, it's best to seek professional help. Additionally, do not use damaged cables, as they can pose a risk of electrical issues or even fires.

I contacted Thermatake tech support. Here is what they said.

1. They were not able to confidently estimate the extent of any damage.

2. They recommended not using the PSU. They were not confident it was safe.

3. They indicated they would not honor any warranty since the damage was due to misuse of the PSU.

As a result I chose not to use the PSU which was unfortunate.
